Spell Bee (15/2/13)

Orchids – The International School always has a number of activities to enhance English language skills of the students and spelling bee is one such activity, to improve English spelling.
Spelling bee is a contest where a student is asked to spell challenging English words within a stipulated time limit. It was a spectacular show with a dazzling backdrop.
It was conducted at various levels for different age groups of classes I to V. Firstly, the contest was held at the individual class level for preliminary screening and then the selected students were divided into 4 groups comprising children from different classes.
The idea behind such grouping is to develop mutual cooperation and team spirit which is very much needed in the present day competitive corporate social scenario.
The groups were named as honey bee, bumble bee, queen bee and busy bee.
Four rounds were conducted beginning with Round 1-Write Right Magic, where the words were spelled out and the students had to write the spellings ,then Round 2- Jumble Tumble in which the words were scrambled and the correct word had to be told orally by the team representative followed by Round 3-Tic-Tac-Toe where the team gets to select a letter and words starting with that letter are spelled and the team representative had to spell out the word and finally Round 4 Look –o-meter in which pictures are shown and the word has to be spelled out.
The spelling bee was widely appreciated and showed a lot of excitement and enthusiasm among the students.

Kids who read often and widely get better at it. Practice makes a man perfect and reading is no different.
Reading exercises our brain, improves concentration, clarity and fluency .Reading leads to more highly developed language skills and improves the child’s ability to write well.
